The word reiki is comprised of two syllables: rei which means “universal” and ki which means “vital energy.” Reiki is the life energy that flows through every living organism, and it is a type of natural healing or energy medicine.
When the ki is flowing freely, one experiences mental and physical health. When it’s blocked, “cloudy,” or weak, one experiences dis-ease. Reiki reestablishes the free and
balanced flow of one’s vital energy.
My clients report a sense of peace, relaxation, and centeredness after a reiki session. But some report specific improvements, with the most common ones being better sleep, a reduction in pain, lessened stress or anxiety, and release from mental, physical, or
spiritual blockages.
I used to dream of healing people by laying my hands on them. Through reiki, my dream has come true.
I discovered reiki in 2021, when my doctor said that my cholesterol was high enough that I should take a statin drug to lower it. I decided that before turning to a pharmaceutical with troubling side effects, I would try something holistic. I was intrigued by what I read about reiki, so I booked a session. It might help; it might not. Certainly, it couldn’t hurt me.
The reiki session was powerful for two reasons. First, several cholesterol tests during a five-month period, charted a 47-point drop in my total score. The only change I’d made was that single but profound reiki treatment. Was that the cause or just a correlation? I believe it was the former. Second, because of that session, I knew that I wanted to heal others by sharing reiki with them.
And now, I’m living my dream.
Becoming a reiki practitioner was an utterly new venture for me. And yet, it wasn’t. For 44 years, I've taught creative writing in a variety of institutions, with the last twenty years spent as a Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and I’m the author of eight books of creative nonfiction (for information about my books, go to www.lisaknopp.com). I see striking similarities between teaching people how to write well about what matters most to them and doing reiki. In both cases, I help them to access deep parts of themselves. In both cases, I help them fine tune the details. The chief difference is that now, instead of reading what people write and then writing back to them about it, I read their energy with my hands and respond by channeling the universal energy, the reiki, and so, help them to heal their bodymindspirit. I am more grateful for this practice than I can say.
